Our story begins in a long-ago kingdom. King Sextimus is mute due to an unfortunate curse. Meanwhile, his fearsome wife, Queen Aggravain, has seized control of the kingdom. Most importantly, in order to keep Prince Dauntless single, she has decreed that only the princess who passes her test will be allowed to marry her son. No one else in the kingdom is allowed to marry until Prince Dauntless does. This fact has greatly disturbed Lady Larken and Sir Harry, as Lady Larken is now pregnant with Sir Harry's child.
Fortunately, Sir Harry is able to locate an exceptional princess, Winnifred the Woebegone. She immediately catches Prince Dauntless' attention and, in the end, passes the Queen's supposedly impossible sensitivity test. When the Queen continues to try to prevent Prince Dauntless from marrying, he tells her to "shut up," breaking the curse on the king. King Sextimus regains his rightful position as ruler of the kingdom, and all is well. Once Upon A Mattress is a delightful musical by Mary Rodgers that is sure to become a fan favorite in theaters everywhere!
